Chapter Twelve

Eric carried the tray of hot chocolate fixings to the kitchen, not surprised to find Krista helping with meal prep. “Fancy meeting you here.” She must have passed through the front hall. Did she hear his conversation with Robert?

She swiped at a tear on her cheek and reached for another onion. “You didn’t hear this from me, but the kitchen is the one room where I know I’ll be safe from Vi.”

Eric rinsed the mugs before stowing them in the dishwasher. “My lips are sealed.” He tore a section off the paper towel roll and dabbed at her cheeks. “There, there, it’ll be okay.”

She sniffed. “Onions are the devil, but I can’t imagine many recipes without them. Savoury things, I mean.”

“You’re one smart woman.”

Krista rinsed her hands, blew her nose, and then washed her hands. “I have my moments. And lots of time to contemplate those big, philosophical questions. The shop isn’t super busy during the winter and most of my evenings are free. You’d be surprised where the mind can roam while frogging a piece of knitting.”

“Frogging?”

“Pulling out stitches to correct a mistake.”

“Do mistakes happen often?”

“Occasionally. All it takes is a momentary distraction and then you’ve dropped a stitch you don’t notice for several rows.”

“A whole new world.” He touched the edge of her sleeve. “Is this one of yours?”

“Yes, and I can show you the scene of the accident.” She held up her left wrist. “I was about four rows from casting off … finishing when I discovered the dropped stitch right about here.” She pointed to an area where the plain knitting joined the fancy stuff. “I may have refilled my wine glass right then.”

“Your secret is safe with me.”

“I tell my students that mistakes make the project one-of-a-kind.”

“Like the famous postage stamp printed upside down and worth millions.”

“Exactly!” She wiped off the cutting board. “I’m lucky my mistakes don’t put lives at risk. I don’t know how you doctors deal with the stress.”

“It comes down to training, experience, and a good team.”

“I’ll stick with my wool and floss.”

Amos came in carrying a crate of assorted produce, his hair dusted with snow. “Hi, Eric, how’re you doing?”

“Not bad. The hot chocolate was great, thanks. Where do you get your vegetables?”

“Have them delivered. This shipment arrived the day before the snow started. The small barn out back is used for storage.”

“Need another pair of hands?”

“Thanks, but I’m all set. Krista’s expert chopping put me back on schedule.”

“What’s on the menu this evening?”

“Just between us?”

“Sure.”

“Well, Rosalind didn’t discuss this evening’s menu with me. I’m taking advantage and adjusting the offerings.”

“Good thinking. One main course then?”

He handed Eric a printed page. “You’ll see what I crossed out.”

“No individual Beef Wellingtons? I’m heartbroken.”

“A large one for the carnivores and pasta for the vegetarians.”

Eric handed the paper to Krista. “You’ll want to keep the dessert in mind.”

“Oh, wow.” She smiled at Chef as if he’d granted her three wishes. “Trifle is my favourite.”

Eric would learn to make trifle if it killed him.
